C ME brings brooding vulnerability on pop rock EP 3182
C ME spins together 2000s-style indie rock sensibilities with strong hooks and yearning delivery on 3182. Listen here.
Her new release blends poetic reminiscence into a satisfying collection of songs with an affinity for the past. Having grown alongside a background of rock, blues and jazz performance,
C ME has spent 2021 onwards steadily building a name for herself. Multiple singles and a consistent stream of shows culminated in a breakthrough of an event just last April: a bustling early EP launch at St. Kilda’s George Lane. It’s a suitable venue, as the project’s namesake is the suburb’s postcode, a choice tied to the portion of her life spent living there.
Inspired by a range of artists (The Cure, Blondie, Paramore) and three years in the making, the EP finds C ME reflective on relationships, rebalancing the space in her head dedicated to lovers of the past, and the tumultuous times brought by them. It’s open and vulnerable, and perfect to brood to. Her jazz roots color the first note of the EP’s somber intro, as C ME weighs the importance bestowed in whom she was once closer with. The processing is in real-time; it’s a brief flicker of the emotional state found over the rest of the project.
After a gentle piano led opening intro, single Imagination takes the stage. An easy banger boasting a strong message amongst Avril Lavigne tendencies. Come On sees C ME face an unrelenting, unforgiving world of bitter news and confusing direction over swaying guitar-driven backing.
People I know is a warm burst of pop rock guitar stabs – a total joy – but not without its lessons learned. “You can lose your soul through the people you know”, she croons, tying the line between lingering pain and acceptance.
Placed at the centre is album highlight TwentyTwenty, where C ME softly examines her remaining wisps of feeling, reflecting on the ‘everlasting labour’ given to a past lover. It’s stripped back – a mere pad and strings support her graceful vocals – but a poignant bed for the inward exploration of her longing.
Closing track Devil In The Room brings a playful Western flair for a strong finale, ending the EP on an upbeat note.
A welcome taster of C ME’s ability; a potent glimpse into the relationship rear-view.
