@scudsmells BRAIN EP
Opening with the noisy jam Freakin Myself Out - the scene is set for a bit of madness. Every member of the band erupts into an explosion of Black Midi-esque rhythmic noise, while vocalist [} repeats the title with reckless abandon.
Follow up Minor Injuries is a classic Naarm punk anthem, complete with gnarly riff, wicked drums and a mosh-ready speed.
Same State contrasts violently between swells of distortion and sparse rhythms. A quick blast through changing tempos and riffs, the energy is nonstop. Throwing in some nuts sax madness in it’s outro, it’s bascially a minute and 40 seconds of madness.
TV Screen changes it up in a fantastic stomper of a slow jam rocker. With an amazing slowly speeding up chorus perfectly paralleled with ascending guitar riffage, it’s like a punk rock fever dream.
Sounding like the riff from Sweet Child O’ Mine gone to hell, Physical Noise rocks like a late stage noisy Nirvana track. Special shout out to the drums on this track, total madness.
Penultimate track Feed Me To The Dogs is a rumbling train speeding towards a hard object. It’s intense anxious rhythms build and dissipate in such off putting yet powerful ways - there’s clearly a madness trapped within these punks.
Closer Tough Cunt embodies Scud as much as the rest of the EP if not more, and I couldn’t think of a title to better embody the noisy swagger of the band.
“Tough like a diamond - like spider’s silk - that’s my mum. Tough cunt!”, to paraphrase.
Scud’s third EP in less than a year is a skip free set of tracks packed with power, attitude and a wild chemistry that can only be topped live. Make sure to listen to the EP here.
